On a warm June afternoon, Linda A. Vallely, licensed real estate associate broker of Pullini Realty, received a phone call from Coney Island resident Goldie Ack, who asked Linda to represent her in the sale of her home. “As we got more into the details of her home and the reason why she wanted to sell,” said Linda, “she disclosed that she has pancreatic cancer. My mind couldn’t work fast enough to think of ways to assist Goldie and her family in a quick sale so they could move to Georgia and be closer to the chemotherapy treatment facility.” After setting an appointment with Goldie and viewing her home, Linda had some inexpensive ideas about what could be improved. The more ideas she came up with, the more out-of-pocket expenses it meant for Goldie. She didn’t have the money for the supplies to fix up her home. Linda went on to tell Goldie that she would try to get Home Depot to donate materials and supplies. Linda went to Home Depot on Cropsey Avenue and spoke with Pete, the day manager. After she explained the whole story to him, Pete told her to draft a letter stating everything she had told him, which he would send to the Charitable Donations Division for approval. Later that week, Linda heard from Sandy of the Inventory Department, who told her that the donation was approved. Sandy requested a list of all supplies needed to complete the job. One day later, Sandy called Linda to tell her that the supplies were ready to be picked up. “I immediately called Goldie about Home Depot’s decision to donate the materials and supplies,” said Linda. “She was as thrilled as I was with the generosity and compassion of others.” Goldie’s son Shawn used the donated materials and supplies to fix up his mother’s home. Goldie moved to Georgia permanently on Labor Day weekend. On November 5,Goldie passed away. “I will remember Goldie with great fondness,” said Linda, “as a woman who got to live her dream, if only for a short time.
